Tesla revives Dojo 3, its AI supercomputer, to power advanced AI training and space-based computing, says Elon Musk.
Tesla has restarted work on its Dojo AI supercomputer. Recently, CEO Elon Musk confirmed that Dojo 3 is back in development. After a long pause, the project has returned with a new direction. As a result, Tesla is once again betting heavily on artificial intelligence. More importantly, the company is looking far beyond electric vehicles.
What Is Tesla Dojo and Why It Matters
To begin with, Tesla built Dojo to train its AI systems. These systems power Full Self-Driving and other smart features. Instead of using common GPUs, Tesla chose to design its own AI chips. Because of this, the system handles huge amounts of driving video more efficiently.
Moreover, this setup helps Tesla train models faster. At the same time, it reduces long-term costs. Most importantly, Tesla keeps full control over its AI tools, which strengthens its overall strategy.
Why Tesla Paused Dojo Before
In 2025, however, Tesla slowed the Dojo project. At that point, the company reassigned engineers to other teams. Meanwhile, it relied more on third-party AI hardware. Musk later explained that too many chip projects reduced efficiency.
Because of this pause, many believed Dojo was over. In reality, Tesla was only waiting for the right moment to continue.
AI5 Chip Progress Brings Dojo 3 Back
That moment came after progress on Tesla’s AI5 chip. According to Musk, the chip design is now stable. As a result, Tesla felt confident restarting Dojo 3.
In addition, Tesla has started hiring engineers again. This move clearly shows that the company sees Dojo as a long-term investment. Going forward, Dojo 3 should train larger AI models at much faster speeds.
Dojo 3’s New Focus: Space-Based AI
More surprisingly, Dojo 3 now has a new role. This time, Musk says Tesla will use it for space-based AI compute. Although Tesla has shared few details, the vision is bold.
For example, computing in space could improve cooling. At the same time, it could speed up data processing. In the future, this approach may support satellite systems and real-time space data.
